National Taiwan University Collection

History
(Written by Prof. Kuang-Yuh Huang, Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Taiwan University)

This department was found in 1943 as a department of the Japenese Taihoku Imperial University, renamed to Department of Mechanical Engineering of National Taiwan University after the defeat of Japen in 1945. After the founding of the department, a large amount of mechanical models were bought from Tokyo for educational use. It is said that some of the models were buried under the seabed alongwith their transport ship in the chaos of war. Although wartorn and age old, they still serve their purpose by inspiring students in the field of mechanical engineering.

NTU Antique Mechanism WebsiteNo doubt that they are treasures of our department. Yet, after 60 years of use, transportation, and insuffcient of maintanace, these educational instruments are starting the wear. Making use of the student service education course and the enthusiasm, in the year 2004 these antiques were maintained, sorted and filed. The work continues in year 2005, the mechanisms are being repaired, more detailly sorted , photographed, video recorded, and displayed on the Antique Mechanism Website, in hope of spreading the knowledge through the internet, allowing more viewers to understand the mechanisms and how it works. More recent works will focus on the expansion of the Antique Mechanism Website, displaying the Mechanisms through 3d computer generated graphics, inspiring even more creativity.
